Water and Sewer
The City of Santa Cruz provides water and sewage services to
the main campus and Long Marine Lab. We are the City’s largest customer
and consume about 5% of the City’s total water production.
Natural Gas
We are members of the State buying pool for natural gas through the Department
of General Services Gas Procurement Program. The fuel prices change monthly
and are a mixture of fixed, long term contracts and spot market prices.
Some of the transportation is provided by PG&E.
Electricity
Since deregulation of electricity began in 1996, we have participated
as a “Direct Access” customer with PG&E. This means that
the electric commodity has been purchased under a separate contract from
the transportation and distribution services that have continued to be
provided by PG&E. The first four years we were under contract with
Enron Corp. and given a 5% discount from what PG&E would have charged
us. With the bankruptcy of Enron and the concurrent collapse of deregulation
in the State we have been able to hang onto our direct access status and
are currently under contract with Arizona Public Services. Our own cogeneration
plant provides about one-half of the main campus electricity and one-third
of the heat. |
